Using Communication Tools to Speak Up Against Abuse
It is an unfortunate reality that in 2018 abuse and neglect continues to be a major issue in the disability sector.
Speaking up is a difficult thing to do for anyone who has experienced abuse and neglect. For those who do not use speech to communicate, or whose speech is difficult to understand, there are additional risks and challenges if they do not possess the tools to talk about what is happening.
Thanks to funding from the Victorian government, Scope’s Communication and Inclusion Resource Centre has developed a communication resource to support people with additional communication needs to talk about abuse and neglect, and a training package for those working directly with them.
Communication boards, factsheets and record sheets that have been developed as part of this project are available for free download on the Speak Up and be Safe from Abuse website. You can also access the resources and find out about upcoming events.
We will be running Speak Up and be Safe from Abuse workshops nationally in partnership with AGOSCI. Visit the AGOSCI events page for more information and to express your interest.
