Continually evolving

We’re halfway through the year and about to hit a really exciting milestone – Scope is turning 70!

We’re excitedly planning the celebrations – there are going to be parties in each Scope location to make sure as many people as possible can participate.

This celebration is about much more than just reminiscing about the past. We are certainly proud of our heritage and the courage of our founding families in creating a new service for children and adults with complex disability, who were not able to receive support from existing services.

Since then, Scope has continually evolved in response to people’s needs and most recently, to the NDIS.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the great people we have working for us.

This year, one of our staff members Hilary Johnson has been shortlisted for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Victorian Disability Awards as a pioneer in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in Australia.

Scope’s other finalists are our Accessible Information service for increasing employment opportunities for people with a disability and our ‘Speak Up and Be Safe Team’, who have created communication tools and resources to strengthen safeguards for people with complex communication needs.

We are so proud of everyone involved and wish them the best of luck for the awards.

These are just some of Scope’s stories, and no doubt each of you has a story about goals you’re achieving, challenges you’ve faced and dreams you have for the future.

This is what truly makes up the heart and soul of Scope, and the focus of our celebrations. So if you’d like to share your story, we’d love to hear from you – tell us at horizon@scopeaust.org.au.
