A few words from board member Barbara Hingston
I was thrilled to be appointed to Scope’s Board in 2018, on the cusp of well-planned strategic and significant growth in Scope’s services.
I am a member of the Business Development Committee and currently chair the Risk and Audit Committee in a dynamic and sometimes challenging environment.
I am proud to be part of Scope, its work, and the governance applied in enabling its future. I value the obligation to keep customers at the heart of the ‘who, what, how, where and why’ of Scope. This underpins the efforts of Board and staff: to provide customer value and experience, ensure high standards of service performance, quality and safety, and provide sector leadership as we all work to grow Scope’s reach and influence, sustainably.
After a senior executive career in the Australian Government and executive leadership of a national Health Care Association, I wanted to work directly with vulnerable individuals, families and communities. I worked in national and state-wide health and hospital systems and social support services.
This strengthened my professional and personal commitment to preventing, responding to and providing support for women, children and young people affected by experiences of family violence, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. I came to know the complexity these experiences brought to people with a disability, highlighting their social and economic invisibility and exclusion, and reinforcing trauma and exploitation.
Wanting to join the Scope Board was shaped by this understanding and respect I have for every individual’s right to live visible and safe lives.
I’ve particularly valued the time I’ve been able to share with customers, staff and families in joyful celebrations of life. I have seen the strengths and talents of Balloon Football League players, shared exhibitions of beautiful vibrant Kaleidoscope artwork, and been welcomed to share in the dancing and singing at the Balloon Football Black Tie Awards.
I look forward to continuing my work on the Board and being a part of the best that Scope is and can be.
