About Key Word Sign training

The training is run by an experienced Key Word Sign accredited Speech Pathologist and includes three, 2-hour training sessions conducted at your centre.

Groups are capped at a maximum of 15 participants to ensure there is sufficient time to practice, and time for questions and practical activities.

What will the training cover?

  • Practical activities to learn and use the interactive Key Word Signs vocabulary.
  • Understanding how children learn language, and how adults can support language development.
  • Ways to create communication opportunities and encourage interaction.

You will receive copies of Getting Started with Key Word Sign booklet for your centre as well as individual copies of Summary of Targeted Language Strategies.

Who can use Key Word Sign?

Key Word Sign adds a visual component to the spoken language, which helps children understand what is said, and provides another way for them to get their messages across to others.  It can bridge a language barrier for children:

  • who are starting to learn English
  • who have delayed speech and language skills
  • who are shy or anxious and choose not to speak
  • who have difficulties being understood
  • who get easily distracted in a busy early childhood setting, as well as typically developing children.
