Actions speak louder than words
Australian Catholic University students recently ran a bake sale aiming to raise awareness for communication access and the role of speech pathology in our community.
Students were challenged to make a purchase at the bake sale without using speech. Students experienced many “light bulb” moments as they found it nearly impossible to convey even a simple message!
“I didn’t think this would be so hard!”
“I feel rude just pointing at what I want.”
“Oops I just spoke!”
These were some of the students’ reactions at the bake sale. Many rose to the challenge, with one nursing student taking the time to print a communication board with some phrases on it to get his message across.
The speech pathology students were excited to share the importance of accessible communication in communities with students of all disciplines.
In addition, the bake sale successfully raised $253.45 for Scope!
