The Rockheads rock out Costa Hall in Geelong

The Rockheads did it again as they ramped up the boogie for the second consecutive year at the Having a Say Conference in Geelong in early February. In fact it was an all-Scope gig as the popular Sugar Bells came down from Ballarat to help out as well.

The Rockheads are a band from the Barwon region that was set up by music therapist, Dr. Mel Murphy and Scope Community Inclusion’s Manny Pimentel (no Dr unfortunately). The group is made up of people supported by Scope and also people with a disability from the wider community. They were so good last year that they were one of the first acts booked for the entertainment part of the conference and they didn’t let anyone down.

After the Sugar Bells had got the crowd up and about, The Rockheads made use of the sound system to play their popular original song, “We Are The Rockheads”. The song went down so well that they ended up playing it three times! From there, the gig only went up in intensity. Laura, dancer and backing vocalist, insisted that “Old McDonald’s Farm” be given a run, and the animal nominations came thick and fast from the band and the crowd! What sound does a mouse make???

The crowd was brought to thoughtful silence when Katie sang her wonderful original song about “doing it her way”. Even Frank Sinatra couldn’t have said it better and there weren’t too many dry eyes in the house.

Of course, no The Rockheads gig is complete without vocalist Tom Lock’s favourite song, “Hospital” by The Lemonheads. Tom sang his heart out! No one wanted The Rockheads to leave and they performed two encores of “We Are The Rockheads”.

The Rockheads on the day were, Georgia, Katie, Laura, Tristan, Tom and Hayley. Missing on the day were Jack, Joel and Rod. The Rockheads could not have done it without the support of their families, Mel, Community Inclusion, and the wonderful Chez and Chris from Shannon Park.

The Rockheads rehearse most weeks in Geelong and are gearing up for some more gigs and also the blockbuster festival they have planned for later in the year.

Get on board, or be boring!!
