Communication Access

Communication access is critical for people with communication difficulties to access mainstream services independently and have more opportunities to meaningfully participate in their community.

Scope’s communication access service will now reach Australians beyond Victoria, as our Communication and Inclusion Resource Centre (CIRC) has been awarded a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) National Readiness grant.

Communication access aims to create a world where people who have communication difficulties are able to communicate successfully with everyone. ILC is part of the NDIS and focuses on community inclusion – making sure people with disability are connected into their communities, and that our community becomes more accessible and inclusive of people with disability.

Through the ILC grant, Scope will provide information, training, expertise and resources to allow one public transport provider in New South Wales and South Australia to begin their journey to becoming Communication Access accredited, building on the work CIRC has done with regional public transport provider V/Line for them to become communication accessible.

In Victoria, CIRC will seek to work with the justice system, selected as a priority following the recommendations in the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission’s Beyond Doubt report as people with a disability are more frequently victims of crime than members of the mainstream community and people with communication difficulties experienced additional barriers to reporting crime.

This grant will have an enormous impact for the 245,000 Australians who live with communication difficulties, and enable them to meaningfully participate and be involved in their community.
