Origins and Superpowers
Telescope Stories.
“Origins and Superpowers” was the theme of a public readings event held by Scope and Melbourne Library Service in December 2015.
A group of writers with disabilities who had worked with professional writers in the Telescope Workshops read selections from their work across the genres of fiction, memoir, poetry and non fiction. These writers had honed skills and explored new territory in the company of their peers and reading publicly was a first-time experience for many – some writers requested that their work be read by a nominated representative. They were joined by family, friends, members of the public, and staff from Scope and Melbourne Library Service for an evening celebration at Library at the Dock, following the readings.
Telescope is one of the arts programs run by Community Inclusion staff at Scope and it includes workshops, a writing prize, awards and public readings. Scope is currently piloting a Telescope mentorship program for writers with disabilities and a sensory storytelling program for people with complex and multiple disabilities.
